42And they continued stedfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.
43And fear came upon every soul: and many wonders and signs were done by the apostles.
44And all that believed were together, and had all things common;
45And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need.
46And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart,
47Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.
Acts 2: 42-47
God’s original design for the church is found in the book Acts. If there was ever a church growth plan that worked, it was the one used by the first-century church. Talk about effectiveness! This church exploded. Why? Because the believers knew why there were there and what they were supposed to do.
If we were to do a side by side comparison of the 1st century church and ourselves, I dare say that we would come up way short.
God’s Original Design
Become a Worshiping church
The early church was built on prayer and worship
As a result, miracles happened every day
They weren’t built on signs and wonders though
However signs and wonders did follow them
They shifted their focus to God
They worshiped in spirit and in truth
Worshipping in spirit and in truth means to worship with the heart and the mind
Become an Evangelistic church
Everything they did was to tell people about Christ
Promoting Christ was not seen as an option, but rather the requirement
Become a Learning church
They listened to the apostle
They read the scriptures themselves
They did what the scriptures said
Become a Loving church
They obeyed the second commandment to love their neighbor as they love themselves
They became known for taking care of people and their own
They became a family
They had true fellowship and ministry
Think of it like this, the first church was W.E.L.L. I believe that when God set up the first church, He did it right! So if we are going to do it right, we need to do it God’s way!
