5 Things Every Christian Must do for Their Government
1 Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.2 Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same:4 For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.5 Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake.6 For for this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God’s ministers, attending continually upon this very thing.7 Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.
Today we will go through the 5 things that every Christian must do for their government if they’re going to obey the Word of God. We’ll start with the most painful first.
We must participate in paying for government
v6-7 “tribute” “custom”
Tribute equals income tax
Custom equals sales tax
Jesus paid his taxes and so should we
We need to pray for government
1 Timothy 2:1
I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;
Pray for our leaders, and for all that enter authority
Pray for those who fight against our enemies
Pray for revival
We can’t complain about it if we haven’t prayed about it
We need to praise our government
To show respect for our nation
To show respect for those who died for our nation
Despite all our problems, the US is still the greatest nation on the earth
We need to participate in government
It is inconceivable that God would ordain government such as He has, and then tell His people to stay out of it!
Shame on the Christian who pledges to the flag but doesn’t do anything about it
Shame on the Christian who pledges to a political party over deeds and morality
We need to Persuade our government
There are many people who have personal arsenals to persuade people
Lots of guns
Will not go down without a fight
This will not influence public opinion
We are a republic
For the most part, laws are created with influence from the public opinion
There’s only one way to affect public opinion: it’s to get the Word of God into the hearts of people!
